A spiritual home for Jacobite Syrian Orthodox families in Hull and East Yorkshire
Hull Chapel of Morth Smooni Jacobite Syrian Christian Church (JSC) is a vibrant faith community serving Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Christian families living in Hull and the wider East Yorkshire region. Operating under the spiritual guidance and administration of Morth Smooni JSC, Sheffield, the chapel was established to provide regular Holy Mass, spiritual nourishment, fellowship, and preservation of the rich liturgical traditions of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in the Malayalam language.
The chapel serves as a spiritual home where families gather for worship, prayer, Sunday School, community celebrations, and charitable activities while remaining rooted in the ancient faith and traditions of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
The Hull Chapel was established following an ordinance granted by His Grace Mor Osthathios Issac Metropolitan, UK Patriarchal Vicar, authorising the conduct of Holy Mass under Morth Smooni JSC, Sheffield.
Recognising the growing Jacobite Christian population in Hull and East Yorkshire, community members Mr Vijo Mathew, Mr Eldhose Skaria, and Dr Eldhose Johny initiated discussions with The Parish Church of Ascension, Hull, to secure a suitable worship venue. Following successful discussions and approval from the church authorities, the first Holy Mass of Hull Chapel was celebrated on 16 June 2024.
Holy Mass is celebrated regularly under the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox tradition, following the Holy Qurbana and liturgical practices of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
The first Holy Mass was celebrated on 16 June 2024 by Rev. Fr Eldho Rajan, who served as the founding Vicar of Hull Chapel. Since January 2025, the chapel has been under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Fr Maju Mani, who continues to guide the congregation spiritually and pastorally.
Sunday School was officially inaugurated in December 2024 to nurture the spiritual growth of children and young people within the chapel community, with the help of volunteers Mr Deepu Mathews, Mrs Jeni, and Mrs Soumya.
Special prayers and commemorations honouring the patron saint of the church are held every June.
Along with Mr Vijo Mathew and Mr Eldhose Skaria, serving as Chapel Coordinators.
Hull Chapel aims to grow as a welcoming Christian community by strengthening worship and pastoral care, encouraging youth and family participation, supporting women and children's ministries, expanding community outreach across East Yorkshire, and preserving the traditions of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox faith for future generations.
